Submission for Ms Kwok Sin Ting, Letty

Before Hon Linda Chan J of High Court Hong Kong

on 30 November 2024, 11:25am at Court 29 High Court Hong Kong

My Lady, it is my  pleasure to move the admission of Ms. Kwok Sin Ting, Letty, as a solicitor of the High Court Hong Kong.

Family Background

Letty has been living with her mother and younger brother since childhood. Her mother, the sole breadwinner, has raised Letty and her brother with great dedication. Today, as Letty joins the ranks of qualified legal professionals and her brother becomes a civil engineer, her mother experiences immense pride in their achievements.

Education & Career Background

Letty is a proud graduate of a renowned girls’ school in Hong Kong. She earned her first degree in Business Administration from Chinese University HK.

While working as a marketing researcher, she occasionally rubbed shoulders with colleagues from legal department,  Letty told me that about six years as a researcher and market analyst, she decided to take the plunge into law, diving into a sea of legal doctrines and critical thinking. To be frank, I believe the truth is the market rate for legal retainer is way better than reading marketing charts.

Juggling a full time job and an evening part time LLB, she earned her LLB from the University of London and completed the PCLL program at the University of Hong Kong.

Ideals and realities are always different

Looking back on her seven years of hard work, she said it was harder than she could have imagined.

Her four years part-time LLB studies were filled with late-night meals that were more about speed than health. She sacrificed family, friends, and personal life just to secure a pricy spot in the one-year PCLL program.

Her two-year traineeship turned out to be even harder than LLB & PCLL together. Clients, colleagues and supervisors often looked to her for answers that cannot be found in textbooks or libraries, and Letty has become an amazing deadline fighter!

Unique Character

Despite all challenges, Letty has shown remarkable resilience. Even sometimes, not too often, when I assigned her tasks that exceeded her initial capabilities, she never say no and consistently returned her assignments on time. Her spirit and positive thinking have carried her to this significant milestone.

Gratitude

Letty wishes to express her gratitude to those who supported her when was a poor ripped-off trainee. Her husband took on all housework without a single word of complaint. Big hands to him for his voluntary and involuntary support! Her mother and younger brother, who provided both spiritual and financial support to school fees, not to mention including countless dinners let her skip the bill. She’s also grateful for her childhood best friends—an engineer, a university lecturer and a doctor —providing hugs and shoulders to lean whenever she need.

Throughout her training, Letty has spent most of her time in both the litigation and commercial departments. She thanks everyone who has been part of her journey, especially her colleagues in Chak & Associates for bringing all joy and laughters.

Last but not least, she offers her deepest gratitude to her principal for providing  guidance and inspiring her to live life to the fullest.

Letty will become a member of the firm’s commercial team, ready to tackle whatever challenges ahead. Today marks a new chapter for Letty as she embarks on this legal journey with empathy, commitment, and perhaps a few clever puns along the way.

My Lady, the papers are in order, and the Department of Justice and the Law Society have no objections to this application. Unless I can be of further assistance, I humbly pray this Court to order that Ms. Kwok be admitted as a Solicitor of the Hong Kong SAR. Raymond Chak Managing Partner of Chak & Associates LLP
